Progress in California

Yesterday was a big day in California—Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a group of bills related to immigration. These bills, including the Trust Act, are designed to allow undocumented immigrants to “come out of the shadows” to integrate into American life. For example, undocumented immigrants in California will now be able to apply for professional licenses, receive driver’s licenses, and qualify for in-state tuition for colleges and universities. The laws will also implement protections for undocumented immigrants in the workplace, and will prevent local law enforcement officials from automatically placing undocumented immigrants into deportation proceedings if they are picked up for minor crimes.
