Sen. Murray and Rep. Polis Introduce New Immigration Legislation

iPhone 9.28.13 262Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) recently introduced the Investing in States to Achieve Tuition Equity (IN-STATE) for Dreamers Act of 2014, which aims to increase access to higher education for low-income students – regardless of their immigration status. Introduced in both the House and Senate, this legislation would provide funding for need-based financial aid to states that set equitable in-state tuition rates and offer financial aid to undocumented students. Approximately 65,000 undocumented students graduate from American high schools every year; this bill would allow those who might not be able to afford out-of-state tuition to public, 4-year colleges to be eligible for in-state tuition. In support of her bill, Senator Patty Murray expressed that “undocumented students are no different than their classmates. They live in the same towns, attend the same schools, and share the same dreams – and they deserve an equal chance to go to college and start successful careers in this country.”
