Asylum Seekers Deserve Better

Yesterday the San Antonio Express-News ran an op-ed entitled “Asylum Seekers Deserve Better,” where Melanie Nezer (HIAS’ VP for Policy & Advocacy) reflects on her recent time providing legal services to detained immigrants in Artesia, New Mexico. In the article, Nezer urges the U.S. government to develop alternatives to immigrant detention — such as home detention or electronic monitoring – which would cost less and be more humane. “Detention should be used in rare cases,” she writes, “and even then [the practice] must be continually reviewed to ensure we are not a country that jails women and children seeking safety.”
