Late last night a federal judge in Brownsville, Texas ruled to block the expansion of Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), both part of President Obama’s Executive Action on immigration.
U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen’s ruling prevents the Administration from implementing the expansion of DAPA/DACA until the constitutionality of the programs are determined. Legal experts expect that Hanen’s ruling will be overturned, but neither program can be implemented while the lawsuit is pending. This means that the Administration is unable to begin accepting applications for the expansion of DACA, which it was set to do tomorrow. This ruling is just one of many political attempts to undermine the actions President Obama took on immigration in the face of Congressional inaction.
