Tomorrow, the Senate plans to vote on the Stop Sanctuary Cities Act (S2146). This bill would withhold federal funding from cities where local law enforcement exercises discretion when inquiring about a person’s immigration status, placing critical law enforcement and community funding at risk. The bill would also increase mandatory minimum sentencing requirements for immigrants who re-enter the country without documentation after deportation.
Despite the fact that the Obama Administration has threatened to veto similar pieces of legislation introduced in the past, Senate leaders still plan to bring this controversial bill to the floor for a vote tomorrow. Recently, almost 1,000 faith leaders sent a letter of opposition to Senate leaders, as did a group of organizations and NGO’s.
